Maybe some "old school", or rather "old farm" wisdom could help. I needed an excuse to share a publication close to my librarian heart for some time: Prairie Farmer Magazine. The entire run is located at the University of Chicago Library. I have not perused this publication for some time, but you can read a bit more its history at: http://www.wlshistory.com/WLS30/. It may not have an index to search its contents by subject. But there may be a back file online with Proquest right now. Maybe some kind librarian can search the literature for you? Call the UC Library at 773-702-7715 to learn more about farming history.
