Winter Solstice December 21

The winter solstice will occur December 21, 2009.  Generaly considered the shortest day of the year, due to the Earth’s orbit, the latest sunrise or earliest sunset may occur up to two weeks in either direction.

Summer Solstice June 21

June 21 is the summer solstice and the sun is directly over the Tropic of Capricorn.  The days grow shorter following the 21st.
